Latin jazz is called a kind of play of the modern jazz, which is characterised particularly by the assumption of rhythms and partly also compositions from the repertoire of the Latin American music. Strictly speaking it predominantly concerns a Crossover between elements of the jazz and different styles out of the Caribbean, whereby again a key position is granted to the music of Cuba. In the broader sense the term includes also influences from the Brazilian Popularmusik also.
As an early form of the Latin jazz Cubop, a mixture from afro Cuban rhythms and Bebop is considered. The style was developed in the forties, particularly by the co-operation of Dizzy Gillespie and Mario Bauza and by Chico O'Farrill.

Demarcation of the term
With the contraction latin (from Latin American) in the USA many cultural phenomena are occupied, which stand in close relationship to Latin America. To the international linguistic usage were transferred above all such designations, which are important in the surrounding field of music and dance.
The terminology usual regarding the afro American music styles does not prove, conditionally for example by linguistic contrasts as well as cultural and partly political reservations, as always meaningfully and helpfully. Among other things it tends to it to mask the fundamental close relationship of the main currents (jazz and Blues from the USA, the Cuban-Caribbean and the Brazilian music) and their continuous mutual influence rather as to clarify.
When a determining factor in the history of the Latin jazz proved it itself above all that such Latin American countries, which have an only small black population portion did not have or an only weak portion of the development of the music.
Thus the music of Mexico met with little response in the jazz despite the direct neighbourhood to the USA only. Even an admission such as Charles Mingus' Tijuana Moods (1957), which in the title the names the Mexican border town carries, reflects in the audible result above all Spanish and Caribbean music. However some originally Mexican Boleros on the detour found over the Cuban music their way in the jazz repertoire, a well-known example are Bésame Mucho of Consuelo Velázquez.
Also the rich musical tradition of Argentina and Uruguay was hardly considered by the jazz long time. Since about 1990 have itself however a remarkable change result in here, which is to due originally particularly to the popularity of the compositions Astor Piazzollas and the Tango Nuevo. Whether this relatively modern „Tango jazz will be added “to the more comprehensive category Latin jazz in the long term, is not to be foreseen at present however yet.
